HOW IT ALL STARTED
Hawthorn is the brainchild of Martin Hawthorn, who in 1987 spotted a gap in the market for a good quality equipment hire company, staffed by knowledgeable and passionate people, to support theatres, dramatic groups, schools and colleges. With great customer service front of mind, he promptly set up shop in his garage in Leicestershire and the rest, as they say, is history.
The business has never stopped and with the acquisition of Core Creative, renowned drapes brand Rex Howard and the hugely well-respected Anagram, a leading provider of audio visual equipment and technical production services, Hawthorn has become a leading production supplier to the events industry.
We're proud to continue to provide a thriving 7 day per week hire service, alongside our creative technical production and a specialist permanent equipment installation division.
Hawthorn has evolved, but our ethos has remained the same: the best customer service in the business, delivered by experts.
Hawthorn is located across three sites in Leicestershire, Cambridge and London - each housing our creative technical production and hire teams and warehouse facilities.
With 150,000 square feet of warehouse space across the sites, accommodating our extensive range of technical equipment worth over £18 million, we’re one of a small number of technical production companies able to provide a specialist in-house maintenance and servicing function, ensuring that each and every item of stock is in full working order.
Employing 2/3 of our workforce, our main warehouse at our Leicestershire headquarters is divided into the following departments, each with its own dedicated workshop and specialist maintenance team.

All electrical items carry unique PAT test labels which can be used to provide their testing history on request. Our rigging equipment is maintained and tested in accordance with LOLER, with all loose gear carrying a colour mark which is changed every 6 month upon inspection.
We also have a separate team working in our despatch and returns areas, ensuring that the right kit reaches its destination in time for each event or hire and ensuring its safe return.

HEALTH & SAFETY
We partner with a specialist health and safety consultant to advise us on all things health and safety and to ensure that we are up to speed and compliant with the latest legislation and best practice.
Hawthorn has been awarded accreditation from Safecontractor for our commitment to achieving excellence in health and safety. Safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors.
In addition to their specialist qualifications, all of our technical site crew have PAL, IPAF, PASMA and SPA Safety Passports, ensuring that they are fully equipped to work safely on site and at height.
The entire Hawthorn team receive annual Health and Safety training from our external specialist regardless of their role in the business. Our Installations Team also have CSCS ECS Certification and are fully CRB checked.
