NEWS UK STUDIO

THE BRIEF

Hawthorn were thrilled to be approached by News UK to provide the design and build of a lighting, control and rigging solution for their new studios facility within the News UK corporate headquarters. We collaborated with News UK studio managers Tony Kibbles and Bradley Wright to design a lighting and rigging system throughout.

The installation covered the three main studios, a small contribution studio, an audio studio and edit facilities located on the first floor, along with additional facilities on the editorial floors for The Times, The Sun, Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal. It was decided early on that all studio facilities were to be simple in operation, using similar, easy to maintain equipment throughout. As the studios are also available for external hire, a simple to use system has the added benefit that clients can take control of their productions with minimal support.

THE EXECUTION

We specified an ETC Paradigm control system as the main control interface, with two processors linked together over nine floors through a dedicated fibre optic network. Our solution included Doughty Engineering studio rail and Pantographs for the main studio, designed by us and manufactured by Doughty’s custom manufacturing team.

As the intention was to primarily use LED lighting, a DMX control network was provided, and control for the lighting was provided by ETC Unison Sensor Processing and Paradigm dimming with touchscreen controls. The ETC Sensor power management not only controlled the studio lighting but also the auxiliary and domestic lighting. An ETC Ion was provided for use when more than basic operation and recall was required. We supplied various lighting fixtures, including ETC Desire D40 Lustr and studio LED Luminaires, and ETC Source 4 LED Studio HD Luminaires. Our solution also included the provision of black wool serge drapes and Reflecmedia Chromatte drapes.

On completion of the installation, we provided training to in-house staff and continue to provide ongoing support to News UK. Satisfying results gained from a truly collaborative approach – the way we like to work!
