Known as the Oscars of the audio-visual world, the AV Awards celebrates best practice and recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals, companies, projects and technology across the AV, events and production sectors. This year’s ceremony was held at Evolution London in Battersea Park. We were chosen to work with a host of sponsors to deliver technical production for the event - a challenging task when you have a room filled with the industry’s finest!

With Evolution London sporting an extra two metres of height this season, the venue looked better than ever and allowed our team to get super creative with the production. Making use of the entire venue space, guests were welcomed into a sparkling drink reception with projection mapping specialists Motion Mapping working their magic on various installations in the room. Adding some extra wow-factor and creating a cool hologram effect, a 20m Holotronica gauze combined with a kabuki drop and pyrotechnics revealed the main dining area with a bang.

Taking inspiration from the branding for this year’s event, we created a futuristic main stage featuring an impressive cityscape backdrop. This was created using 300 panels of super-bright LED supplied by Leyard which ensured the video content, created in-house by our expert team, was displayed at its very best. This was complemented by a futuristic lighting design that utilised over 110 fixtures. Pulsar Chroma Flood, Martin MAC Aura and Viper fixtures featured on the impressive rig and delivered dynamic effects for the ceremony whilst also creating the perfect party atmosphere for revellers who danced into the early hours.

“Evolution underwent a refresh this summer which saw the venue gain an extra 2 metres of height. This was very exciting for us as it meant that we now have 8 metres of internal height to work with” comments Tom Ring, our Senior Project Manager who led the team. “This allowed us to deliver a huge LED backdrop to the main stage, with lighting suspended above. We were also able to hang speakers at full height, ensuring there were no obstructions to the sightlines of the screen.”

Guests were treated to a three-course dinner followed by an award ceremony hosted by comedian Sean Lock. After the converted accolades were handed out, guests partied the night away to DJ Benny Blanco.

Talking about Hawthorn’s involvement this year, Ring said “The AV Awards celebrate the very best talent in the AV industry so to be asked to deliver this year’s production was an incredible honour. It was great fun to work alongside the AV Awards event team to create an incredible experience for their guests and get really creative with our delivery. Not just that, but working with the incredible technical sponsors meant we had a whole host of cutting-edge equipment to work with. Here at Hawthorn, we strongly believe in collaboration to create extraordinary event experiences and AV Awards is a perfect example of that.”
