ON THE ROAD WITH ‘THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME’ UK TOUR
Having taken London’s West End by storm, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is also currently touring the UK, with Hawthorn supplying lighting equipment for the award-winning production.
Hailed by The Times as ‘a phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle’, the National Theatre’s production is based on the 2003 book by Mark Haddon. The story follows Christopher, a fifteen-year-old boy, who finds his neighbour’s dog who has been killed with a garden fork. Having never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.
We worked with renowned Lighting Designer Paule Constable to provide lighting equipment for her Olivier award-winning design. This included supplying industry workhorses such as the Martin MAC TW1 and the ETC Source 4 Revolution combined with newer technology such as the ETC LUSTR 2 LED Profile and Clay Paky’s new moving light, the Scenius Profile chosen for its wide zoom, framing and high optical output.
The remaining rig is made up of a number of conventional ETC Source 4 profiles and PARS, Selecon Arena 2.5K PCs, Rainbow 12” Scrollers, a Martin Atomic Strobe, Pulsar Chroma LED UV Floods, Studio Due Archibars, Viper smoke machines all controlled from an ETC networked system utilising both the GIO and ION consoles.
Preparation was key for the production allowing the ‘Curious’ LX team to go from truck to complete installed overhead rig in just two hours. During the team’s week at our Leicestershire warehouse, kit and cable was prepped to precision with the majority of the fixtures being loaded into pre-rig trusses and towers. A unique ‘dimmer world’ dolly system was created by Chris Mence, Production Electrician, for the tour. This saw three complete Avolites ART2000 dimmer racks being permanently installed in-line with the networking control rack, audio interface racks and pyrotechnic control creating a very clever ‘Plug and Play’ scenario with only one single loom being sent up to the main overhead rig.
Mark Burnett, Business Development Manager at Hawthorn, said “We’re honored to be on board for the UK tour of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This is very much a prestigious show to add to our portfolio and we are excited to have been chosen to supply this chapter of the show’s ongoing success which has been captivating audiences since its debut at the National Theatre back in 2012.
Chris Mence, Production Electrician for the show, said “I was pleased to hear that Hawthorn had been chosen to supply this tour. Having worked with the team on a previous project I was eager to see if the quality of service was still as good as it was - I wasn't disappointed. It's always nice to come to Old Dalby, we had a week to prep this tour and once again all staff were very friendly and welcoming.
“Curious is quite a technically demanding production. Hawthorn have been with us every step of the way to ensure this high quality product is always kept that way.”
The UK tour kicked off at Lowry, Salford on 21st January and will be visiting twenty-five venues before closing on 16 September 2017 in Milton Keynes.
