If you’ve ever talked to us about a permanent installation or buying equipment, you’ll probably have spoken to Lydia, one of the friendly voices at the end of the phone.

Daughter of owner Martin Hawthorn, Lydia works in our Install team. Having previously worked in all manner of roles across the business, from servicing, folding drapes and soldering connectors to PAT testing and untangling fairy lights, she’s been involved in nearly everything! We got together to find out a bit more about life as our Installation & Purchasing Manager…

Can you tell us a bit more about what your current role involves?

My role is incredibly varied; I provide quotations for sales, servicing and installation work and work closely with suppliers to purchase equipment for our sales, hire and installation stock. A large amount of my time is spend working on consultant-led projects, from filling out PQQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaires) to writing up specifications.

I also work on the installation admin side of the team, scheduling engineers, vans and equipment to ensure everyone and everything turns up to the right site at the right time.

What do you enjoy about working in the Install team?

The fact that every day is different – I love being busy and the days are non-stop. We are quite a small team but everyone is a team player and helps to make each job a success.

Sounds like there isn't a typical day?

Typical day? I don’t think those days exist! I’m constantly attached to my emails so when I arrive for the day I generally know what needs to be acted upon first and then take it from there to see where the day takes me. I find flexibility is key!

You’ve seen the business grow from its earliest years – what’s your fondest memory?

On a personal note, working on the Crucible Theatre was a particular highlight as it was my first big job. Being able to work on all projects, providing support through to completion of a job and seeing happy customers who return to us again and again for future work always fills me with pride.

And last but not least, how do you like to relax after a busy day?

My life is filled with animals; my horses and dogs are my main passion and don’t leave much time for anything else. Fortunately my other half spends as much time playing cricket as I do with my horses, but when we do get chance we love to travel and enjoy going on holidays.
